5 Ways To Browse The Web Securely

Cyberattacks continue to increase every year and even browsing the web can leave to hackers, identity theft, viruses and ransomware.

In this blog we’re going to cover 6 easy steps to take to increase your cybersecurity when browsing the web.

5 steps to increase your browsing security more secure

1. Configure Your Browser’s Security

As well as any device-wide security settings, most browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Safari) also have their own individual security settings. If you’ve never looked at these settings before, now would be a good time to start.

For instance, you should set your browser to warn you when you are being redirected to an insecure site (a site without an SSL certificate). This will prevent you inadvertently accessing an insecure site.

2. Be Careful Of Browser Extensions

There are thousands of browser extensions and plugins available. Some of them are extremely useful and most are completely harmless, however, if you install a malicious one you are giving it full access to your browser, including the ability to monitor every site you go to. Always check that the extension you are trying to install comes from a reputable developer and is well reviewed.

3. Regularly Clear Cache, Cookies and Browser History

Cookies are a useful too which makes browsing the same websites multiple times a faster process. However, they can also put you at higher risk and can contain personal information. Many browsers let you automatically clear them on a scheduled basis, along with other cached data and your browsing history. It is recommended to do this at least once a month, but some people choose to do it after every browsing session.

You should always clear cache and history if you have been browsing on a shared or public device (like at the library).

4. Use Antivirus Software

If you do accidentally download malware, having an effective antivirus software installed will make it harder for attackers to access your machine. There are several options available, including both paid and free versions. Known brands like Avast, Panda and Norton are all trustworthy and effective antivirus programmes and their paid versions come with extra security measures which can also secure your email and social media.

5. Always look for SSL Certificates

When browsing, make sure that the websites you are on are always using SSL certificates, meaning they have a small padlock symbol in the address bar. This signifies that the site’s traffic is encrypted so an attacker cannot see what you are doing on the site and cannot read password or other sensitive information that you may enter in a text box.
