Everything You Need To Know About Wireless Network Security

Here are some simple steps that you can take today to make your wireless network more secure.

1. Make Sure Your Network Is Encrypted

The first step toward true wireless network security is encryption. Put simply, this means securing your network with a password.

If your router gives you a choice of password encryption you should always choose WPA2, or failing that WPA, never WEP as it is and old and easily bypassed encryption standard. Us a strong password with numbers, letters and special characters.

2. Change The Default Settings On Your Router

As default setting are determined by the manufacturer, they are known to all. This means any vulnerabilities are known too. You should change these default settings at least.

a. the default network name.

b. The router’s password.

c. the default IP address.

As with the above step, you should make sure any newly set passwords are secure and that you remember them or have them saved in a password manager.

3. Do Not Permit Remote Access

Most routers’ admin panels can only be accessed by devices on the same network by default, but some can be accessed remotely by any device which knows your IP. For this reasons you should check that remote access if turner off, otherwise you are making it easier for hackers to access your router.

4. Always Install Updates When Available

This is a key point in wireless network security. All devices that are connected to the network should have the software and firmware fully up to date. Many cyberattacks happen as a result of known vulnerabilities in out-of-date software.

Your router's firmware includes bugs and could be exploited by cyber criminals and hackers.  Some routers will update automatically but any require manual updates. Set a reminder and check it monthly for new updates.

5. Enable Your Router’s Built-In Firewall

A firewall that can be activated from the settings of the router comes with several routers. We recommend that you activate this feature to give you a extra layer of wireless network security.

In Conclusion

By following these steps and exercising common sense while browsing online, you should be protected from the majority of online threats that a normal user would face.
